Net Margin

Definition

Net margin, also called net profit margin, is net income expressed as a percentage of revenue. It represents the ultimate profitability of a business after all costs (COGS, operating expenses, interest, and taxes) have been deducted, showing how many cents of profit remain from each dollar earned.

Formula

Net Margin = (Net Income ÷ Revenue) × 100

Overview

Net margin is the most comprehensive profitability ratio because it accounts for every expense the business incurs. While gross margin shows product-level economics and operating margin shows operational efficiency, net margin reveals the true bottom-line profitability including financing costs and taxes.

Most venture-backed startups operate with negative net margins during their growth phase, intentionally prioritizing market capture over profitability. However, the path to positive net margin should be visible in the business model, meaning gross margins are healthy and operating expenses as a percentage of revenue are decreasing over time.

For benchmarking, mature SaaS companies typically achieve net margins of 15 to 25 % once they reach scale and moderate their growth spending. Companies valued primarily on profitability (rather than growth) are judged heavily on their net margin expansion trajectory.

Example

Revenue of $200K and net income of $30K yields a net margin of ($30K ÷ $200K) × 100 = 15 %.
