A cash reserve is money set aside by a business to cover unexpected expenses, revenue shortfalls, or emergency situations. Maintaining an adequate cash reserve protects startups from cash flow disruptions and provides a buffer that prevents reactive decision-making during temporary downturns.

Cash reserves are the financial safety net that keeps a business operational when things do not go as planned. For startups, unexpected costs can include emergency engineering work, legal issues, customer refunds, or sudden increases in infrastructure costs. Tying reserve capital up in longer-term investments defeats the purpose of having an emergency fund that can be deployed immediately.
